DArrel MCpherson

"My goal in working from life, the struggle to translate one’s surrounding into art. The reward is in creating the form of lucid depth, rich in texture. The intensity is increased by adding layers of color along with articulated brush movement. This combination causes painting to break through the pigment, moving form from the realm of the sublime into the realized world of the present. The artist must engage in spirit as much as technique. Reality and abstraction blur lines between the perceived and the observed. The challenge is to communicate through the medium of what is felt and what is to come."

McPherson’s colors are soft and emoted, he quickly renders them on the spot to capture the essence of time, space and nostalgia as felt by past masters, in a technique known as en plein air. His larger works are then started the same day while the feeling is still fresh.

McPherson has painted constantly from 1970 to the present. His background in art started  at Indiana University and his work later transformed in Memphis.
He moved from abstract  to  Impressionism during 1988 from viewing of a small paint sketch by Pissarro.  “When I saw for the first time the power of feeling of an afternoon in the French countryside so long ago, I realized the spirit of a work can be more than the image.”
His last breakthrough occurred  in 2006 that  transformed his art, leading to his present work.

The artist considers his school of influence to be the French School and the California Style as well as the Hudson River School. His influences are Pissarro, Gauguin, Monet, Degas, Edgar Payne andMaurice Bran.,
His works have been shown in galleries across the country and collected globally.
